Grooved Ware Pit

Click here to find out how the Grooved Ware Pit fits into our story

During the Late Neolithic the inhabitants dug small, shallow pits and filled them with fragments of Grooved Ware pottery, flint tools and burnt stone and plants. Many of the flint and stone tools from these pits were reused, damaged or even deliberately broken. Offerings of food, including joints of meat, cereals and autumn fruits and berries were placed in the pits. These pits sometimes occur in pairs or in small clusters on Neolithic sites, often close to Neolithic monuments. At T5 several were dug close to the Horseshoe Enclosure. They may have been dug to deposit the remains of ceremonial feasts.
