The construction of Terminal 5 at Heathrow, today the world’s busiest international airport, was preceded by one of the largest archaeological investigations ever undertaken in the UK. Its scale has for the first time allowed the complex history of the Middle Thames Valley to be explored. This volume covers over 8,000 years of human history, including early prehistoric ceremonial activity, the introduction of farming and the imposition of administrative control in the Roman period.

Borne of a unique relationship between heritage and development sectors, this is a new style excavation report. Designed to provide the reader with an accessible interpretation of the findings it also allows the coherency of those interpretations to be checked through the presentation of the detailed results of the excavations.

Specialist Reports

Download 15 of the T5 Volume 1 specialist reports (zipped PDF files, 2.4MB), or view them online on Scribd.

Download 24 of the T5 Volume 2 specialist reports (zipped PDF files, 84MB).

Dig Deeper – Data Downloads

Quick Start
There are two files you need to download.
Download the Framework Free Viewer – our free data viewer (4.5MB)
Download the T5 Volume 2 data to load into the Freeviewer (724MB)

If you would like to delve right down to the excavation data, you can download the Framework Freeviewer, a Windows based GIS application which allows you to explore the detailed information collected during the excavation and analysis.

For help and technical information about the Framework Freeviewer installation package, visit the data downloads section.

For those who prefer to use their own software or who use a non-Windows operating system, the data behind the Framework Free Viewer can be downloaded in a variety of formats.

Buy the Book

The first volume of the Heathrow Terminal 5 Excavations is sold out, but volume two, which presents the the definitive interpretations, is now available from Oxbow books.

The construction of Terminal 5 at Heathrow, today the world’s busiest international airport, was preceded by one of the largest archaeological investigations ever undertaken in the UK.
